Senator Blumenthal Receives Senate Judiciary Subcommittee Assignments

Blumenthal to Use Post to Protect Privacy, Consumer Rights

(Washington, DC) – Senator Richard Blumenthal (D-CT) announced today that he has been named to four Senate Judiciary Committee Subcommittees in the 112th Congress. Senator Blumenthal will serve on two key subcommittees focused on protecting the interests of consumers – the Subcommittee on Antitrust, Competition Policy and Consumer Rights; and the newly created Subcommittee on Privacy, Technology and the Law. Blumenthal has also been named to the Subcommittee on the Constitution, Civil Rights and Human Rights; and the Subcommittee on Immigration, Refugees and Border Security.

“I look forward to working with my colleagues on each of these subcommittees toward real and practical solutions for the people of Connecticut and our country,” Blumenthal said. “In an era of expanding consumer options and constantly evolving technologies I am particularly excited to join the Privacy and Antitrust Subcommittees, which have jurisdiction over several facets of consumer protection and privacy, because it is more important than ever that the law keeps pace with these advances. I have spent many years working on these issues as Attorney General, and I am eager to continue this work to stand up for the people of Connecticut.”

The Subcommittee on Privacy, Technology and the Law is a new addition to the Senate Judiciary Committee that will focus on defending privacy and security in the digital age. Additionally, the Subcommittee on Antitrust, Competition Policy and Consumer Rights will work to protect choice and competition in the marketplace and ensure the best deals for consumers.

Subcommittee on Antitrust, Competition Policy and Consumer Rights

The Subcommittee on Antitrust, Competition Policy and Consumer Rights has jurisdiction over antitrust law and competition policy, antitrust enforcement at the Federal Trade Commission, and oversight of competition policy at the Department of Justice and other federal agencies. Senator Blumenthal looks forward to continuing to advocate for consumers as a member of this subcommittee.

Subcommittee on the Constitution, Civil Rights and Human Rights

The Subcommittee on the Constitution, Civil Rights and Human Rights has a wide-ranging jurisdiction that includes human rights laws and policies, constitutional amendments, and constitutional rights. Senator Blumenthal will continue to defend the civil rights and civil liberties of the people of Connecticut as a member of this subcommittee.

Subcommittee on Immigration, Refugees and Border Security

The Subcommittee on Immigration, Refugees and Border Security has jurisdiction over immigration and citizenship laws, and immigration-related functions at the Departments of Homeland Security, Justice, State, Health and Human Services, and Labor. It also oversees a variety of refugee laws, international migration, and private immigration relief bills.

Subcommittee on Privacy, Technology and the Law

The newest subcommittee to the Senate Judiciary Committee, the Subcommittee on Privacy, Technology and the Law, has jurisdiction over laws and policies governing the collection, protection, use and dissemination of commercial information by the private sector. The subcommittee will work to better protect consumers and the public from falling victim to the collection and dissemination of personal information online. Senator Blumenthal has worked tirelessly to protect the public from online fraud and will continue these efforts as a member of this new subcommittee.
