(Hartford, CT) – U.S. Senator Richard Blumenthal (D-Conn.) issued the following statement today regarding Connecticut's vote today to adopt bipartisan common sense gun violence legislation:
"I am thankful and proud that Connecticut is leading the nation today in adopting bipartisan common sense gun violence legislation. Connecticut is leading by example and provided a courageous and strong model—the strongest in the nation-- for other states and Congress to follow.
Now Congress must act. Connecticut’s action today should provide impetus and momentum for Senate action this month. I will hold up Connecticut as a model for bipartisan action in urging my Senate colleagues to move forward with sensible gun violence measures.
Even with strong state laws, national legislation is critical. The spread of lethal and illegal guns respects no state borders. It is time for Congress to vote to approve sensible federal legislation to get the weapons of war off our streets, ban illegal trafficking and straw purchases, institute universal background checks, provide law enforcement the tools they need to enforce the laws on the books, improve the safety of our schools and strengthen our mental health system."
