Senate Committee to Hold Hearing on Takata Airbag Recall at Blumenthal and Markey's Request

[WASHINGTON, DC] – The Senate Commerce Subcommittee on Consumer Protection, Product Safety, Insurance and Data Security will hold a hearing on Tuesday, March 20, 2018 to review the status of the Takata airbag recall. U.S. Senators Richard Blumenthal (D-CT) and Edward J. Markey (D-MA), members of the Senate Commerce, Science, and Transportation Committee, called for a hearing on the ongoing recall in a January letter to Chairman John Thune (R-SD) and Ranking Member Bill Nelson (D-FL), after a “do not drive” instruction was issued by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) for car models with Takata airbags. High-risk defective Takata airbags have been ruled responsible for 21 deaths globally.

“We are hopeful that this hearing will yield long-overdue, critical information about what automakers and regulators have done and will do to protect drivers and passengers from exploding Takata airbags,” said the Senators. “Witnesses must outline next steps that will be taken to ensure no more lives are lost from this stunning cover-up. With millions of lives at risk due to defective Takata airbags still in vehicles, Congress and the driving public deserve answers.”

Blumenthal is Ranking Member of the Senate Commerce Subcommittee on Consumer Protection, Product Safety, Insurance and Data Security.
