[WASHINGTON, D.C.] - U.S. Senator Richard Blumenthal (D-Conn.) today welcomed news that the Grocery Manufacturers Association and Food Marketing Institute have instituted a new voluntary initiative to streamline food date labels. Blumenthal also announced he will reintroduce his Food Date Labeling Act to ensure a uniform national standard to reduce confusion and food waste.
“Commonsense, standard food labels save money and reduce food waste. This voluntary initiative is a positive first step towards streamlining the dizzying patchwork of arbitrary and confusing food date labels. I look forward to continuing to work with food manufacturers nationwide to build on this voluntary program and establish a uniform national standard through reintroduction of the Food Date Labeling Act,” Blumenthal said.
