Blumenthal, Whitehouse & Gun Safety Advocates Detail Judicial Threat to Gun Violence Prevention

“The ruthless effort to reshape the federal courts at every level must be stopped.”

[WASHINGTON, D.C.] – Today, U.S. Senators Richard Blumenthal (D-CT) and Sheldon Whitehouse (D-RI), along with representatives from Giffords, Everytown for Gun Safety, Brady: United Against Gun Violence, and March for Our Lives, outlined the commonsense gun safety laws that are threatened by the nomination of Judge Amy Coney Barrett to the Supreme Court and the gun lobby’s ongoing efforts to reshape the federal judiciary. Earlier today, Blumenthal and Whitehouse unveiled a new report that details the process by which the corrupt powerful gun lobby has captured courts to strike down commonsense gun safety laws.

“This report is really a powerhouse demonstration of how the NRA has led at the tip of the spear a dark money campaign to reshape the federal courts,” said Blumenthal on today’s press call. “It has funneled money from a collection of special interest dark money groups that have sought to block legislation in state legislatures and Congress, but it has also launched a very concerted campaign to strike down legislation through the courts. It has sought to in effect, reshape the courts with an extreme, radical view of the Second Amendment, and deluging dark money from the gun lobby to Republicans helped explain why they’re rushing to confirm Amy Coney Barrett who favors felons owning firearms.”
