(HARTFORD, CT) – U.S. Senator Richard Blumenthal (D-Conn.) released the following statement after the Internal Revenue Service (IRS) issued guidance that seniors, veterans, and others that typically do not file a tax return will need to file a simple tax return in order access to the economic impact payments included in the Coronavirus Aid, Relief, and Economic Security (CARES) Act:
“The federal government already has all the information it should need from seniors who receive Social Security or VA benefits. In order to get checks out quickly they should use it. Conflicting guidance and limited access to tax assistance is causing chaos and confusion among seniors desperate for this financial lifeline. We should be able to come up with a swift solution that doesn’t require seniors to file an additional, unnecessary tax return to receive this much-needed resource.”
