Blumenthal to Hold Hearing on Safe Gun Storage

Tomorrow, Blumenthal will chair a hearing in the Senate Judiciary Constitution Subcommittee on legislative efforts to enforce secure firearm storage

[WASHINGTON, D.C.] – U.S. Senator Richard Blumenthal (D-CT), Chairman of the Senate Judiciary Subcommittee on the Constitution, will convene a hearing on Tuesday, May 25, 2021 at 2:30 PM titled “Stop Gun Violence: Safe Storage.” The hearing is the third in a series Blumenthal is holding to examine constitutional and commonsense efforts to prevent gun violence.

“Safe gun storage saves lives,” Blumenthal said. “Something as simple as a lock or a gun safe would prevent hundreds of needless deaths every year – from children who accidentally kill a friend or a sibling to the teenagers who take their own lives. We’ll hear tomorrow from witnesses who have personal, tragic experience with the consequences of failing to make safe storage the standard.”

The hearing will include testimony from:

  • Joseph Bartozzi, President and CEO of the National Shooting Sports Foundation;
  • Dr. Ted Bonar, Director of End Family Fire at Brady;
  • Dr. Maya Haasz, Assistant Professor of Pediatrics-Emergency Medicine at Children’s Hospital Colorado Anschutz Medical Campus;
  • Kristin Song, mother of Ethan Song, resident of Guilford, CT; and
  • Stephen Willeford, resident of Sutherland Springs, TX.
