Blumenthal Statement on Trump Executive Order Restricting Vulnerable Americans' Access to Social Safety Net

[WASHINGTON, DC] – U.S. Senator Richard Blumenthal (D-CT) released the following statement after President Trump signed an Executive Order that will make it harder for poor and low-income Americans to access social safety net programs, like the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP), while imposing stringent work requirements.

“This misguided, malevolent Executive Order is yet another glaring example of the Trump Administration’s war on poor and low-income American families,” said Blumenthal. “Proven social safety net programs have been able to elevate millions of Americans out of poverty by providing critical access to basic needs like child care, food assistance, and affordable housing, among other supports and services. I will fight any effort to severely limit access to these critical programs by implementing rigid work requirements, which are designed only to cut important benefits for seniors, disabled, and low-income families.”
