Blumenthal Statement on Supreme Court Striking Down Louisiana Abortion Restrictions & Defending Women's Constitutional Abortion Rights

Senator calls for swift passage of the Women’s Health Protection Act

[WASHINGTON, D.C.] – U.S. Senator Richard Blumenthal (D-CT), a member of the Senate Judiciary Committee and leading sponsor of the Women’s Health Protection Act (WHPA), released the following statement after the Supreme Court struck down Louisiana’s restrictions on abortion providers and upheld Constitutional abortion rights:

“This historic victory for reproductive rights is no cause for complacency. It is a landmark legal win against radical politicians relentlessly attacking reproductive rights all around America. The court has sent an unmistakable message: key constitutional precedent still stands strong. As opponents continue efforts to chip away and destroy women’s rights, the fight must be redoubled. I’ll continue to work for the Women’s Health Protection Act to safeguard reproductive rights no matter where women may live.”

The Women’s Health Protection Act would enshrine the protections from Roe v. Wade into federal law, and ensure that no state can pass medically unnecessary restrictions on abortion access or care. Since 2011, states have passed over 450 restrictions on abortion access, like requiring wider doors in clinics, unnecessary waiting periods, or hospital admitting privileges for providers. These restrictions mean that for many, their constitutional right to an abortion is dependent on their ZIP code, which puts women at risk by making health care harder to access.
