Blumenthal Statement on Republican Rejection of Bipartisan Proposal to Protect Dreamers

[WASHINGTON, DC] – U.S. Senator Richard Blumenthal (D-CT) released the following statement after the Senate failed to approve a bipartisan compromise that would provide a pathway to citizenship for the Dreamers:

“I am heartbroken that the Dreamers remain at severe risk of mass, draconian deportation after the Senate’s abject failure to act responsibly and protect them. Protecting the Dreamers has been my priority in this legislative battle, which is why I supported this measure to provide permanent status and a pathway to citizenship. This compromise was not perfect but I believe it was our best immediate hope to avoid an inhumane, un-American catastrophe,” Blumenthal said.

“I am furious that President Trump threw a ticking time bomb to Congress, and then slammed the door on compromise at every turn. Instead of working with Democrats, Senator McConnell put forward partisan proposals that prioritized an extremist agenda over serious solutions. Today’s vote was a setback, but I will not stop fighting to protect Dreamers and all immigrant communities.”
