Blumenthal Statement On Passage Of 2013 Farm Bill

BLUMENTHAL STATEMENT ON PASSAGE OF 2013 FARM BILL

(Washington, DC) – Today, U.S. Senator Richard Blumenthal (D-Conn.) released the following statement after the Senate voted 66-27 to pass the bipartisan Agriculture Reform, Food, and Jobs ACt of 2013, also referred to as the Farm Bill:

“Although disappointing in significant respects – most especially over $4 billion in cuts to the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP), which is vital to many families in Connecticut and across the country – the farm bill will strengthen America’s agricultural industry while saving taxpayer dollars.

“I am glad this legislation would make it a crime to be a spectator at an animal fight, as well as to bring a child to one of these horrific events – closing this glaring loophole in federal law.  I am also glad this legislation strengthens the federal safety net for dairy farmers in Connecticut – sustaining them during good and bad economic times.

“I hope my colleagues in the House maintain these protections and others in their version of the bill.”
