(Hartford, CT)—Today, U.S. Senator Richard Blumenthal (D-Conn.) released a statement following recent news of an E. coli outbreak linked to romaine lettuce. According to the CDC, two people in Connecticut have been infected with the outbreak strain of E. coli.
“My thoughts are with the two Connecticut individuals stricken by the E. coli outbreak—a preventable public health disaster. I urge the CDC to expedite its investigation into the cause of the outbreak and increase its public outreach to ensure consumers and retailers are given the guidance they need to stay safe. The FDA must act aggressively to disclose all voluntary recalls, and if retailers are not participating, a mandatory recall must be initiated immediately. This is a serious public health threat with potential for widespread severe health consequences. The federal government must act swiftly and effectively.”
