(Washington, DC) – Today, Senator Richard Blumenthal (D-Conn.) issued the following statement on the bankruptcy filing by for-profit higher education company Corinthian Colleges, Inc.:
“Corinthian's formal filing-- acknowledging its catastrophic financial failure-- should be a clarion call to action for stronger student and veteran protections against predatory for-profit schools. Corinthian was bankrupt morally well before its financial insolvency-- and now all who lined their pockets from these unconscionable schemes should be held accountable. Students left in the lurch, with mountains of debt and no value, should be given relief. Their debts should be discharged as promptly and painlessly as possibly. While some for profit schools may act responsibly, the reprehensible bad actors should be stopped-- and I'll pursue new legislation if necessary.”
