Blumenthal Statement on Campbell Soup’s Decision to Support Federal Mandatory GMO Labeling Standard

(Hartford, CT) – Today, U.S. Senator Richard Blumenthal (D-Conn.) issued the following statement on Campbell Soup Company’s announcement that it will support a single mandatory labeling standard for foods derived from genetically modified organisms (GMOs) and will begin labeling ingredients derived from GMOs on all of its U.S. products:

Campbell’s decision to add GMO labeling to their products is a courageous, commendable act of pro-consumer leadership – a move that lives up to the company’s “Mmm Mmm Good” motto. This commonsense decision by Campbells – and all of Campbell’s brands, including the iconic Connecticut company Pepperidge Farm – will enable consumers to make informed decisions about the food they and their families eat.  I am also pleased by Campbell’s support for federal legislation, like legislation that I have led, that will establish a strong, mandatory federal standard for GMO labeling. I urge other companies to follow suit and listen to the overwhelming demand of consumers to respect their basic right to know what is in their food.”

Last year, Blumenthal introduced the Food Labeling Modernization Act of 2015 to empower consumers to make smart eating choices by minimizing confusing and misleading information that consumers encounter on food packages, as well as the Genetically Engineered Right to Know Act, which would require the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) to clearly label genetically engineered foods so that consumers can make informed choices about what they eat.
