Blumenthal Statement on Awarding of Congressional Gold Medal to Montford Marines

(Washington, DC) – Senator Richard Blumenthal (D-CT) released the following statement today on the awarding of the Congressional Gold Medal to the Montford Marines. The Montford Marines, formed in 1941, are the first the African Americans to serve in the U.S. Marine Corps. They fought heroically in the Pacific Theater during WWII. Of the over nineteen thousand original Montford Marines, one hundred and twenty are still living today.

“This medal recognizes brave patriots who stepped forward to fight for our nation when we needed them most, without any thought that they would be honored or even thanked. Today we say to the Montford Marines and to all Marines whose bravery and commitment they epitomize: thank you for your service and Happy Birthday. Their courage in fighting overseas in WWII – while challenging racism and segregation on the home front – is a testament to their valor and character. As we celebrate both the 236th birthday of the Marine Corps and Veterans Day this week, their stories remind us of the incredible sacrifices of our servicemembers, past and future.”
