[HARTFORD, CT] – Today, U.S. Senator Richard Blumenthal (D-CT) issued a statement recognizing the 44th anniversary of the Supreme Court’s landmark Roe v. Wade decision, which upheld a woman’s right to safe and legal abortion. The decision was handed down on January 22, 1973. This year’s anniversary follows a day of coordinated marches throughout the country – and around the world – in which hundreds of thousands of people united to advocate for an agenda that includes reproductive rights.
“Forty-four years after the Supreme Court decided Roe v. Wade, we still are still fighting the radical conservative agenda of anti-choice extremists. But as we witnessed yesterday – when millions of people gathered together to support progressive values like reproductive choice – the women of the world will not accept a future in which they do have control over their own healthcare decisions,” Blumenthal said. “I was proud to join them yesterday, just as I am proud to be their ally every day. A woman’s right to privacy and autonomy over her body is fundamental. ”
