[WASHINGTON, D.C.] – U.S. Senator Richard Blumenthal (D-CT) is calling on Congress to take immediate action to effectively respond to the Zika virus. The Senate today voted against moving forward on a partisan measure that failed to address the crisis. In the wake of this vote, Blumenthal is urging Congress to come together to put forward real solutions.
“Even as the Zika virus spreads around the world, Republican lawmakers in Congress staged a show-vote today on an ineffective proposal bereft of bipartisan support, and destined to fail. I will continue to fight for real solutions—investments in research for a vaccine, eradication of mosquitoes, and public education. An effective response to this disease must include resources to prevent all forms of transmission. Aggressively restricting contraception options for women for a virus that can be sexually transmitted defies all reason. We need meaningful action, and we need it now.”
