(Washington, DC) – Today, U.S. Senators Richard Blumenthal (D-Conn.) and Bill Nelson (D-Fla.), members of the Senate Committee on Commerce, Science, and Transportation, released the following statement on the Federal Communications Commission’s (FCC) settlement with AT&T for $25 million after an investigation into breach of sensitive consumer data:
"This case underscores the importance of getting our nation’s data security laws right. The nature of sensitive information – and its value to hackers and thieves – continues to evolve as more and more private information is compiled and stored by companies that consumers have invested their trust in. Consumers expect these companies to employ reasonable and appropriate security measures to protect that personal information. It also shows the need of having multiple cops on the beat - from the FCC and FTC to state consumer officials - to protect consumers."
