Blumenthal Leads Senators Calling for DOJ Review of Trump Administration Efforts to Protect Fossil Fuel Companies From Accountability for Decades of Climate Deception

[WASHINGTON, D.C.] – Today, U.S. Senators Richard Blumenthal (D-CT), Sheldon Whitehouse (D-RI), Edward J. Markey (D-MA), Mazie Hirono (D-HI), Ben Cardin (D-MD), Chris Van Hollen (D-MD), Alex Padilla (D-CA), Elizabeth Warren (D-MA), and Brian Schatz (D-HI) wrote Attorney General Merrick Garland requesting that the Department of Justice review amicus briefs filed during the Trump Administration in support of fossil fuel companies that engaged in decades of deception regarding climate change.

In today’s letter, the senators urged Garland to “keep President Biden’s commitment as well as your own commitment to environmental justice in mind as you review the Department’s positions and participation in each case, and support efforts to hold polluters accountable for their deception.” The senators also reiterated their support for an effort by the Department of Justice to investigate the same deceptive practices that have driven lawsuits filed by five state Attorneys General, the Attorney General of the District of Columbia, as well as twenty cities and counties.
