Blumenthal, Larson Announce $575,000 To Fight Housing Discrimination In Connecticut

(Hartford, CT) – Today, U.S. Senator Richard Blumenthal (D-CT) and Congressman John Larson (CT-1) announced $575,000 in grants from the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development's (HUD) Fair Housing Initiatives Program (FHIP) to assist victims of housing discrimination in Connecticut.

Three grants were awarded to Connecticut Fair Housing Center, Inc. in Hartford. One grant of $325,000 will be used to provide administrative, investigative, and legal services to individuals who may encounter discrimination based on their race, ethnicity, disability, or sexual preference when seeking to rent, buy, or finance a home. Two grants totaling $250,000 will be used for public outreach, education, and training to promote fair housing in the community.

"These grants help ensure that victims of discriminatory housing practices in Connecticut have the support they require," said Senator Blumenthal. "The Fair Housing Center is at the forefront of fighting for access to fair and affordable housing."

"No American should have to face discrimination when it comes to finding affordable housing," Congressman Larson said. "I applaud the Administration for their commitment to ending discrimination in Connecticut and throughout the country. This funding will help the CT Fair Housing Center continue their vital work in combating discriminatory practices throughout the state."

HUD's Fair Housing Initiatives Program distributes grants nationwide to 99 fair housing organizations and other non-profit agencies in 35 states and the District of Columbia. The grants will be used to enforce the Fair Housing Act through investigation and testing of alleged discriminatory practices, and to educate housing providers, local governments, and potential victims of housing discrimination about their rights and responsibilities under the Fair Housing Act.
