Blumenthal Holds Call With Department of Justice Agency Review Team

[WASHINGTON, D.C.] – U.S. Senator Richard Blumenthal (D-CT), a member of the Senate Judiciary Committee, held a call with members of the Biden-Harris Agency Review Team for the Department of Justice. During the call, Blumenthal raised his concerns regarding the Trump Administration’s politicization of the Justice Department, which has eroded morale within the agency and damaged the public’s trust in law enforcement. Blumenthal also highlighted several legislative priorities, including gun violence prevention measures, police reform, voting rights, comprehensive immigration reform, antitrust enforcement, and the NO HATE Act.

“One of the major challenges facing the incoming Biden-Harris Administration is rebuilding faith and trust in our federal justice system. After four years of cronyism and corruption, it’s a daunting task, but one I am eager to join them in tackling.”

“President-elect Biden and Vice President-elect Harris have been unwavering allies in the fight against gun violence, and I look forward to having partners in the White House who share a commitment to stronger background checks, an end to the gun industry’s sweetheart immunity shield, and expanded extreme risk protection orders.”

“I’d also like to see the Department of Justice finally adhere to the Death in Custody Reporting Act, a bill Congressman Scott and I led in 2014, and which has yet to be fully implemented or enforced. The fact that we don’t even know how many people die every year in police custody or during an arrest is outrageous. I’d also like to see better data and reporting on hate crimes, which my NO HATE Act would require. Statistics won’t solve these major civil rights issues, but understanding the scope of a problem is a fundamental first step to fixing it.”
