(Washington, DC) – Today, Senators Richard Blumenthal (D-Conn.) and Dick Durbin (D-Ill.) released the following statement regarding the coalition that several state attorneys general will be launching to identify and stop fraud in the herbal supplement industry: “We are pleased to learn that the New York Attorney General’s investigation into the sale of possibly fraudulently-labeled dietary supplements by four national retailers has led to a broader investigation by AGs in Connecticut, Indiana, and Puerto Rico. Although the Food and Drug Administration has not yet initiated a broader crack-down of the wildly unregulated dietary supplement industry, states working together on a national problem like this one can be effective in making sure that misbranded and dangerous dietary supplements are not allowed to pose a threat to consumers. Ultimately, consumers nationwide – not just in select states – deserve to know what is really in the supplements they are buying. We commit to working together to advance common sense legislation that will protect consumers nationwide from products with big claims and potentially dangerous ingredients.”
