[WASHINGTON, D.C.] – U.S. Senator Richard Blumenthal (D-CT), Chair of the Senate Commerce, Science, and Transportation Subcommittee on Consumer Protection, Product Safety, and Data Security, applauded today’s Federal Trade Commission’s (FTC) announcement that it was creating a new rulemaking group within the FTC’s Office of General Counsel. FTC’s rulemaking power is critical to strengthening existing rules and advancing new rulemakings to stop harm to consumers and promote healthy market competition.
“The FTC’s announcement is a welcome sign that the Commission is ready to flex its muscle for consumers and competition,” Blumenthal said. “As Chair of the Subcommittee on Consumer Protection, I have long championed the Commission using all of its rulemaking and enforcement authorities to hold lawbreakers accountable, to reign in Big Tech, to set consumer safeguards, and to protect American workers. I am eager for the FTC’s new rulemaking group to start this urgently-needed work and already have a list of priorities ready to share.”
