Blumenthal Applauds Advancement of Bipartisan Bill to Combat Opioid Crisis, Support Mental Health Reform

[WASHINGTON, D.C.] – U.S. Senator Richard Blumenthal (D-CT) today applauded the Senate’s vote to move forward with the 21st Century Cures Act, which includes emergency federal funding to combat the opioid and heroin epidemic, significant reforms to the mental health system, and funding for medical research on cancer and other diseases. The bill was passed by the House of Representatives last week, and will receive a final vote in the Senate this week.

“Today’s vote marks major progress toward a massive milestone in American public health,” Blumenthal said. “In fighting the epidemic of opioid addiction, this bill puts the nation’s money where its mouth is. It commits real resources—not just rhetoric—to mental health, cancer, Lyme Disease, and other challenges. It will literally save lives, taking the fight for better public health to the streets and schools of Connecticut. I look forward to the Senate swiftly passing this comprehensive legislation, and I will work to ensure these critical resources come to our state.”
