Blumenthal Announces Opposition to Mike Pompeo's Nomination to be Secretary of State

[WASHINGTON, D.C.] – Today U.S. Senator Richard Blumenthal (D-CT), a member of the Senate Armed Services Committee, announced his opposition to the nomination of Mike Pompeo to be Secretary of State:

“Our nation needs a top diplomat who values diplomacy and knows how it’s done. Mike Pompeo’s record prioritizes military might over constructive engagement and negotiation. American power relies on American values and views, which requires our Secretary of State to lead by example. Mr. Pompeo’s values and views are contrary to America’s. He has devalued and dismissed religious freedom and tolerance, and allied himself with anti-Islam and anti-LGBTQ groups. Pompeo’s regressive views on reproductive rights jeopardize the health care millions of women around the world. Mike Pompeo will only reinforce President Trump’s worst instincts. I cannot support his nomination.”
