Blumenthal Statement on Senate Vote to Override Trump Veto of War Powers Resolution

[WASHINGTON, DC] – U.S. Senator Richard Blumenthal (D-CT) released the following statement today following a failed Senate vote to override President Trump’s veto of the bipartisan Iran War Powers Resolution, which reasserts the sole Constitutional authority of the United States Congress to declare war:

“A war against an insidious global pandemic is now unavoidable but Americans should be spared an unnecessary military conflict that harms our national interests without protecting our national security. The Constitution is clear: the power to declare war lies with Congress. Anything short of a declaration of war with Iran from the United States Congress is unconstitutional. Military actions conducted without a strategy, without the support – or even consent – of the American people have deeply dangerous consequences.”
